Description

A savory and vibrant dish of beef strips and caramelized onions, perfect for cozy weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450g) beef strips (sirloin or ribeye)
  • 6 tbsp (90g) vegetable oil, divided
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp (15g) grated fresh ginger
  • 3 tbsp (45g) soy sauce, divided
  • 3 tbsp (45g) oyster sauce (optional), divided
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp (30g) hoisin sauce
  • 2 tbsp (30g) rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp (15g) cornstarch
  • 1 large onion, sliced

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine 1 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp oyster sauce, grated ginger, minced garlic, and sesame oil to make a marinade. Toss the beef strips in the marinade and let them marinate for 10-15 minutes.
  2. Heat 1 tbsp vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and sauté until golden and caramelized, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper and remove from the pan.
  3. Increase the heat to high, add 2 tbsp vegetable oil, and sear the marinated beef strips for 2-3 minutes until browned.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together 2 tbsp soy sauce, 2 tbsp oyster sauce, rice vinegar, and cornstarch. Pour this sauce over the beef and stir to thicken.
  5. Return the caramelized onions to the skillet, mixing well with the beef and sauce. Serve immediately over rice or noodles.

Notes

For a twist, consider adding seasonal vegetables or swapping beef for chicken, shrimp, or tofu.
