Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cold unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)


Instructions

  1. Dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it rest.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. Add the milk and the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes, then cover and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 hour.
  5. Roll out the dough into a rectangle, place the cold butter in the center, and fold the dough over the butter.
  6. Roll out the dough again and fold it into thirds. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  7. Repeat the rolling and folding process two more times.
  8. Roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thick, cut into triangles, and roll them from base to tip.
  9. Place the croissants on a baking sheet, let them rise for another 30 minutes, and preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  10. Brush the croissants with egg wash and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
